MARS Missions Some Thing to Know

The Recent Success of the MOM(Mars Orbiter Mission) by ISRO made me to write this article,..as the great intelligence in the mission is the method of entering into the Martian Orbit. Where as when we compare with the other projects that had been carried out by NASA this project had been completed with a few amount that to 450crores is a less amount when compared to the project cost of the others.

#Mars the planet that is next to us in the solar system and the planet that is named as Red Planet due to the presence of the Iron oxide  prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance,..And many of the satellites shown that the methane is present in the atmosphere of this Red planet.

Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth. The rotational period and seasonal cycles of Mars are likewise similar to those of Earth, as is the tilt that produces the seasons.

Mars is the site of Olympus Mons, the second highest known mountain within the Solar System (the tallest on a planet), and of Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons. The smooth Borealis basin in the northern hemisphere covers 40% of the planet and may be a giant impact feature. Mars has two known moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are small and irregularly shaped. These may be captured asteroids, similar to 5261 Eureka, a Martian trojan asteroid.

By the first Successful Mars flyby Mariner 4 in 1965 we got a speculated information about the presence of liquid water on the presence of it.Currently there are three satellites orbiting it-Mars Odyssey,Mars Express and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and two rovers on the planet-Mars Exploration Rover "Opportunity" and Mars Science Laboratory "Curiosity". Some of these Satellites shown the images of the water flown marks on the planet. And there are some more satellites and lander which are successful in delivering their information but currently not in a position to work. One of them is Phoenix landed in 2008 and Spirit with its brother Opportunity which were launched in a gap of few months to two different places. For a landing rovers the scientists mainly have to select a best place like they mostly select the Craters.Craters are the holes formed when an asteroid hit the planet.Recently a Lab sized Rover Curiosity had a successful land on the mars with the help of space crane landing, where as the spirit and opportunity landed on it with the help of air balloons covering them.
Behalf of all these many movies had been pictured based on the things that these missions found. Some explained how the life will be there, some explained the alien attacks from the mars and some shown how we Ruined our mother planet and went there to make a new life..

How ever these things shown now many of the people are going to taste what they have seen in the movies. Many of the people had been registered for a one way mission to the mars to land on to it and settle there. And the amazing one is 8000 Indian people had registered with it. These are proposed by a Non-Profit Organization by the name of MARS ONE. Mars One is a non-profit organization that plans to establish a permanent human colony on Mars by 2023. The private spaceflight project is led by Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp, who announced plans for the Mars One mission in May 2012.

Mars Orbiter Mission Details

The path details is
Mars Orbiter Mission carries five scientific payloads to observe Martian surface, atmosphere and exosphere extending up to 80,000 km for a detailed understanding of the evolution of that planet, especially the related geologic and the possible biogenic processes on that interesting planet. These payloads consist of a camera, two spectrometers, a radiometer and a photometer. Together, they have a weight of about 15 kg.

Payload Primary Objective Weight (Kg)
Mars Colour Camera (MCC) Optical imaging 1.27
Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer(TIS) Map surface composition and mineralogy 3.2
Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM) Detection of Methane presence 2.94
Mars Enospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA) Study of the neutral composition of Martian upper atmosphere 3.56
Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP) Study of Escape processes of Martian upper atmosphere through Deuterium/Hydrogen 1.97

Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP)
Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP) is an absorption cell photometer. It measures the relative abundance of deuterium and hydrogen from lyman-alpha emission in the Martian upper atmosphere (typically Exosphere and exobase). Measurement of D/H (Deuterium to Hydrogen abundance Ratio) allows us to understand especially the loss process of water from the planet.

Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM)
MSM is designed to measure Methane (CH4) in the Martian atmosphere with PPB accuracy and map its sources. Data is acquired only over illuminated scene as the sensor measures reflected solar radiation. Methane concentration in the Martian atmosphere undergoes spatial and temporal variations.

Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA)
MENCA is a quadruple mass spectrometer capable of analyzing the neutral composition in the range of 1 to 300 amu with unit mass resolution. The heritage of this payload is from Chandra’s Altitudinal Composition Explorer (CHACE) payload. MENCA is a quadrupole mass spectrometer based scientific payload, capable of measuring relative abundances of neutral constituents in the mass range of 1 to 300 amu, with a unit mass resolution.

Mars Color Camera (MCC)
This tri-color Mars color camera gives images & information about the surface features and composition of Martian surface. They are useful to monitor the dynamic events and weather of Mars. MCC will also be used for probing the two satellites of Mars-Phobos & Deimos. It also provides the context information for other science payloads.

Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS)
TIS measure the thermal emission and can be operated during both day and night. Temperature and emissivity are the two basic physical parameters estimated from thermal emission measurement. Many minerals and soil types have characteristic spectra in TIR region. TIS can map surface composition and mineralogy of Mars.

Let see the INDIA to be one of the Amazing on in all Aspects
